What's in a Name?

Schutze Lake got its name from a person named Luther Schuetze. He once carved his name into a tamarack tree near the lake. He left out the letters "c" and "e" from his last name because there wasn't enough space on the tree.

Where is Schutze Lake?

This lake is located in Northwestern Ontario. It is about 6 kilometres (4 mi) east of a community called Poplar Hill.

How Big is Schutze Lake?

Schutze Lake is a good-sized lake.

  • It is about 4.5 kilometres (2.8 mi) long.
  • It is about 3.9 kilometres (2.4 mi) wide.
  • The lake sits at an elevation of 314 metres (1,030 ft) above sea level.

Water Flow: In and Out

Water flows into and out of Schutze Lake.

  • Inflows: Four small, unnamed creeks bring water into the lake. These creeks flow in from the east, south, and southwest sides.
  • Outflow: The main way water leaves the lake is through another unnamed creek. This creek flows west from Schutze Lake into the Berens River.
  • Journey to the Ocean: The Berens River then flows into Lake Winnipeg. From Lake Winnipeg, the water eventually reaches Hudson Bay through the Nelson River. This means Schutze Lake is part of the large drainage basin that leads to Hudson Bay. A drainage basin is like a giant funnel where all the rain and snowmelt collect and flow into one main river or lake system.
