Early Life and College Stardom
Sidney Lowe grew up in Washington, D.C., and played basketball at DeMatha Catholic High School, a school known for its strong sports teams. After high school, he went to North Carolina State University to play college basketball.
At NC State, Lowe was the team's point guard, which is like the team's on-court leader. In 1983, he led his team, the Wolfpack, to an amazing victory in the NCAA National Championship. This was a huge accomplishment and one of the most famous underdog stories in college basketball history.
Professional Playing Career
Playing in the NBA and CBA
After his success in college, Lowe was chosen by the Chicago Bulls in the 1983 NBA draft. He played four seasons in the NBA for five different teams, including the Indiana Pacers and the Charlotte Hornets.
Lowe also played in the Continental Basketball Association (CBA), where he had great success. He won three CBA championships and earned several awards, including being named to the All-CBA First Team in 1988.
A Long Career in Coaching
After he stopped playing in 1991, Lowe immediately began coaching. He has worked for many different NBA teams, often as an assistant coach, helping the head coach guide the team.
Head Coaching Roles
Lowe had the chance to be a head coach for two NBA teams. He first led the Minnesota Timberwolves from 1993 to 1994. Later, he coached the Vancouver Grizzlies. He was their coach when the team moved to Memphis and became the Memphis Grizzlies. As a head coach, he helped his teams improve, even setting a record for the most wins in a season for the Grizzlies at that time.
Return to College Basketball
In 2006, Lowe returned to his old college, NC State, this time as the head coach. This was a special moment, as he was the first African American head coach for the Wolfpack basketball team. To honor his former coach, Jim Valvano, Lowe often wore a special red blazer during important games.
During his five years at NC State, his teams had some big wins. However, they did not make it to the main NCAA tournament, and Lowe left the position in 2011.
Recent Coaching Jobs
Since leaving NC State, Lowe has continued his career as an assistant coach in the NBA. He has shared his knowledge with teams like the Utah Jazz, Washington Wizards, and Cleveland Cavaliers. He has worked with the Minnesota Timberwolves and Detroit Pistons multiple times. As of 2024, he is an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.
Personal Life
In 1984, Lowe married Melonie Moultry. His wedding was a big event with 20 groomsmen, including many of his famous teammates from his championship-winning college team.
