Sidney Lowe started his basketball journey at DeMatha Catholic High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. After high school, he went on to play college basketball at NC State. He was a key player, serving as the point guard for the Wolfpack team.

In 1983, Lowe helped lead his team to a huge victory. They won the NCAA National Championship. This was a very exciting time for NC State basketball. His jersey number, 35, is now honored by NC State. This shows how important he was to the team.

Playing in the NBA

After his successful college career, Sidney Lowe was chosen in the 1983 NBA draft. The Chicago Bulls picked him as the first choice in the second round. He played for four seasons in the NBA. During this time, he played for five different teams. These teams included the Indiana Pacers, Detroit Pistons, Atlanta Hawks, Charlotte Hornets, and Minnesota Timberwolves.

Sidney Lowe's Coaching Journey

After he stopped playing basketball in 1991, Lowe began his coaching career.

Starting as an Assistant Coach

His first coaching job was as an assistant coach for the Minnesota Timberwolves. He worked there from 1991 to 1992.

First Time as a Head Coach

In the middle of the 1992–93 season, Lowe became the head coach for the Timberwolves. He stayed in this role until the end of the 1993–94 season. After that, he worked as an assistant coach for the Cleveland Cavaliers from 1994 to 1999. He then returned to the Timberwolves as an assistant for one season in 1999.

Coaching the Grizzlies

The 2000–01 NBA season marked Lowe's second time as a head coach. He took over the Vancouver Grizzlies. He led the team to their best record ever, 23 wins and 59 losses, in his first season. The next season, 2001–02, the Grizzlies moved to Memphis. Lowe led them to the same record again. He resigned early in the 2002–03 season.

Returning to Assistant Coaching Roles

In 2003, Lowe went back to the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach. He then joined the Detroit Pistons in 2005, also as an assistant coach. He stayed with the Pistons until 2006.

Coaching at NC State University

To become a head coach in college basketball, Lowe finished his business degree online. On May 6, 2006, he was named the new head basketball coach for North Carolina State University. He was the first African American head coach for the Wolfpack team. Lowe often wore a red blazer to important games. He did this to honor his former NC State coach, Jim Valvano.

In his first year, Lowe achieved great success. He won 20 games and beat three other big North Carolina teams: Duke, North Carolina, and Wake Forest. He was one of only four NC State coaches to reach the ACC Championship game in their first year.

Despite this good start, his teams did not make it to the NCAA tournament. They only played in the NIT twice. After five years, Lowe resigned as head coach of NC State on March 15, 2011.

Recent Coaching Positions

Later in 2011, Lowe became an assistant coach for the Utah Jazz. He worked there until 2013. At the start of the 2014–15 season, he rejoined the Minnesota Timberwolves as an assistant coach. In 2016, the Washington Wizards hired him as an assistant coach. Lowe then returned to the Detroit Pistons in 2018 as an assistant coach. On August 26, 2021, he was hired by the Cleveland Cavaliers as an assistant coach. He is currently an assistant coach for the Detroit Pistons.
