The Siege of Groenlo was an important battle during the Eighty Years' War. It was also part of the Anglo-Spanish War. A Dutch and English army, led by Maurice of Nassau, attacked the town of Groenlo. This siege happened after Maurice had tried and failed to capture Groenlo in 1595.
Capturing Groenlo in 1597
The siege of Groenlo began on September 11, 1597. It lasted for 17 days. The battle ended on September 28, 1597. The Dutch and English forces successfully took control of the town. They captured it from the Spanish soldiers who were defending it.
What Happened Next
After taking Groenlo, the Dutch and English troops moved on. Their next goal was to capture Bredevoort. This was part of a series of successful attacks by Maurice of Nassau against the Spanish in 1597.
Groenlo remained under Dutch control for some time. However, it was later attacked again. This happened during a siege in 1606 by Ambrosio Spinola.
