Silenen is a small town, also called a municipality, in Switzerland. It is located in the beautiful Uri canton.
Geography of Silenen
The municipality of Silenen includes several villages. These are Silenen (which has three parts: Dörfli, Russ, and Rusli), Amsteg, and Acherli. There are also many smaller groups of houses, called hamlets. These include Schützen, Buechholz, and Öfibach. Other hamlets are Dägerlohn, Frentschenberg, and Ried. The Maderanerthal valley also has small settlements. These include St. Anton, Bristen, and Cholplatz.
Silenen covers an area of about 144.8 square kilometers (55.9 square miles). A small part of this land, about 12.8%, is used for farming. This mostly includes mountain pastures where animals graze. Forests cover about 18.3% of the area. Only a tiny part, 0.7%, has buildings or roads. The largest part, 68.1%, is made up of mountains and other non-farmable land.
You can reach Arnisee, a beautiful lake, by a gondola lift from Amsteg. This is a fun way to see the area.
The Zwing Uri Castle is an old fortress overlooking Amsteg. It is important in Swiss history. It was one of the first castles destroyed when the Old Swiss Confederacy began. This event is known as the Burgenbruch.
People and Population
Silenen has a population of about 2,232 people. In 2007, about 11.7% of the people living here were from other countries. Over the past 10 years, the population has grown by about 4.5%.
