Silurian Valley facts for kids
Silurian Valley is a long valley found in the hot Mojave Desert in San Bernardino County, California. It stretches from north to south.
Its northern end is located just southeast of the bottom of Death Valley at 35°37′17″N 116°16′07″W / 35.62139°N 116.26861°W. The southern end of the valley is at 35°23′36″N 116°08′02″W / 35.39333°N 116.13389°W.
What is Silurian Valley Like?
Silurian Valley is a dry, desert area. Even though it's a desert, it has a creek and two lakes!
Water in the Desert
The valley is drained by a creek called Salt Creek. This creek flows into the Amargosa River. The valley also contains two lakes: Silurian Lake and Dry Sand Lake. These lakes are often dry or have very little water, especially during hot times of the year.
What's Around the Valley?
Silurian Valley is surrounded by different mountains and hills.
- To the northwest are the Salt Spring Hills.
- To the north, you'll find the Dumont Dunes and Dumont Hills.
- The Avawatz Mountains are to the west.
- To the northeast is the Kingston Range.
- On the east side are the Valjean Valley and Silurian Hills.
- To the southeast and south, the Soda Mountains form a boundary.
