Silver City is a special area in the mountains of central Tulare County, California. It's not a regular town, but a place that was once counted for the census. Silver City is very high up, about 6,732 feet (2,052 meters) above sea level. It is located inside Sequoia National Park, about 72 kilometers (45 miles) east-northeast of Visalia, California. The 2010 census showed that no one lived there permanently.

Silver City is a private area within Sequoia National Park. It's found at mile 21 on the road that leads to Mineral King. This area has 58 private plots of land, and 39 of them have cabins. There's also a small business area with a store, a restaurant, and cabins you can rent. This place is called the Silver City Mountain Resort. People only stay there during spring, summer, and fall, because it gets too snowy in winter.

Where is Silver City Located?

According to the United States Census Bureau, Silver City covers an area of about 0.6 square miles (1.5 square kilometers). All of this area is land, with no water bodies like lakes or rivers within its boundaries.

A Look Back: Silver City's History

Early People in the Area

For thousands of years, people have lived in the area around Silver City. The Wukchumni, a Yokuts tribe, set up their main camps along the Kaweah River in the lower parts of the mountains. When summer got too hot, these people would move up to the cooler, higher elevations. This means they were the first to use the Silver City area. They also traded with the Monache and Numic peoples, who came over the Sierra Nevada mountains from the east to hunt and gather food.

First Settlers and Ranchers

The first modern settler in Silver City was Hale Tharp, who made his home there in 1856. Two years later, in 1858, Tharp's brother-in-law, John Swanson, built a house. For many years after that, ranchers from the valley would bring their cattle to graze in these high mountain areas during the hot summer months.

The Short-Lived Gold Rush

By 1873, people found enough metal ore in the nearby mountains to start a small gold rush. Even though this gold rush didn't last long, it helped Mineral King and Silver City become busy communities during the summertime.
