The History of Silverhill
Silverhill was started in 1897 by three people from Chicago, Illinois: Oscar Johnson, C. O. Carlson, and C. A. Valentin. Oscar Johnson was an immigrant who came from Dalarna, Sweden.
Oscar Johnson also created the Svea Land Company in Chicago. This company helped sell land in Silverhill to new settlers. The first piece of land bought was about 1,500 acres (607 hectares). More land was added as more people moved to the area. Many Scandinavian families came to Silverhill from different parts of the United States. They helped build the community that Silverhill is today.
In 1902, a local general store called the People's Supply Company opened. It was a very important place for the community for many years, until the 1980s.
A fun place to visit nearby is the Wales West Light Railway. It is a train ride that looks like a Welsh mountain railway. It is located about 5 miles (8 km) southwest of Silverhill.
