Silvio Moser (born April 24, 1941 – died May 26, 1974) was a skilled racing driver from Switzerland. He competed in Formula One, the highest level of car racing, for several years. He was known for racing his own cars, often against bigger teams.
Early Racing Days
Silvio Moser started his racing journey in the early 1960s. He first raced Alfa Romeo cars. By 1964, he moved into "single-seater" cars. These are race cars designed for just one driver. He did very well in races like European Formula Three. He also found success in the Temporada Series in South America.
His Time in Formula One
Silvio Moser had built a strong name for himself in lower racing series. These included Formula Junior, Formula Three, and Formula Two. He also raced in sports car racing.
He made his first attempt to join a Formula One race in 1966. This was at the 1966 German Grand Prix. He tried to qualify with a Brabham car. But his engine had problems during practice.
Silvio Moser officially started his Formula One career on July 15, 1967. This was at the 1967 British Grand Prix. He drove a Cooper car for the Vögele Team.
He continued to race in Formula One for several years:
- In 1968, he drove a Brabham car.
- In 1969, he raced a Brabham car that he entered himself.
- In 1970, he drove a Bellasi car. He also raced this car for one event in 1971.
In total, Silvio Moser took part in 19 Formula One World Championship races. He started in 12 of these races. He earned a total of three championship points during his Formula One career.
Later Career and Passing
After his time in Formula One, Silvio Moser went back to Formula Two racing. He drove a Brabham car in 1971 and 1972. In 1973, he raced a Surtees car. He had some good results, including a second-place finish at a race in Monza.
Sadly, Silvio Moser passed away on May 26, 1974. He was involved in a serious accident while racing his Lola-BMW car. This happened during a 1,000 km sports car race at Monza. He suffered severe injuries and did not wake up. He passed away 31 days after the accident.
