How Simon Joined Coronation Street
When Simon Gregory was a student at The Kingsway School in Stockport in 1989, he joined a search for new actors for Coronation Street. The show was looking for two new characters, known as the 'McDonald Twins'. Another student from his school, Nicholas Cochrane, was chosen to play Andy McDonald. The show then needed someone else who looked similar to Nicholas. Simon was the only student who matched the height, build, and hair color needed.
Because he fit the description, Simon was chosen to audition further at Granada Television. Both he and Nicholas got the parts. Simon was first credited by his real name, Simon Gregory. However, when he was old enough to join Equity, which is an actors' union, he changed his stage name to 'Gregson'. He did this because there was already another actor named Simon Gregory in the union.
