Sin Don's Role in Goryeo
Sin Don was a Buddhist monk who gained the full trust of King Gongmin. The King believed Sin Don was very clever. He wanted Sin Don to help make the Goryeo society better.
In 1365, King Gongmin gave Sin Don a special nickname, "Cheonghan Geosa." He also gave him a noble title, Jinpyeonghu, which means Chinpyŏng Marquess.
Efforts to Reform Goryeo
Sin Don worked hard to bring new ideas to the government. He appointed a group of new, smart officials called shinjin sadaebu. These new officials helped to remove some powerful people who had become corrupt.
He also helped set up a special government office in 1366. This office was called the Jeonmin Byeonjeong Dogam. Its main goal was to fix problems with land ownership and help common people. Many powerful families did not like these changes because they lost their influence.
Challenges and Downfall
Even though Sin Don had the King's support, he faced many challenges. He was surrounded by people who only pretended to support him. He did not have many true friends or allies.
Because of this, he lost his power. Finally, King Gongmin ordered his execution in 1371.
Criticism of Sin Don's Power
King Gongmin tried to make the country stronger by giving Sin Don a lot of power. This plan had some success at first. However, King Gongmin gave Sin Don almost complete control.
This led to some criticism. People felt that Sin Don had too much power, almost as much as the King himself. This caused problems in the government.
