What Does the Sindh Ibex Look Like?
Sindh ibex are strong animals with sturdy bodies and powerful legs. They have wide hooves that help them climb.
Colors and Markings
Young Sindh ibex and female goats are usually yellowish-brown or reddish-grey. They have a darker brown line running down their back.
Older male ibex are very striking. Their bodies are almost silver-white, but their chest, throat, and face are a sooty grey. As males get older, more white hair appears on their neck and body.
Horns and Beards
Mature male Sindh ibex have long, curved horns that can be over 102 centimeters (40 inches) long! These horns curve upwards and outwards. Males also have short beards, but females do not have beards.
The hair on their summer coat is short and rough. In summer, even adult males look more reddish-buff. Older males have a dark pattern on their face. They also have a clear black stripe that goes from their shoulders down to their chest.
How Many Sindh Ibex Are There?
In Kirthar National Park in Pakistan, there are about 30,000 Sindh ibex. This shows that conservation efforts are helping this vulnerable species.
How Do Sindh Ibex Live?
Sindh ibex are social animals. If they are not disturbed, they gather in large herds. Older males often stay together, sometimes on the edge of the main group.
Daily Habits
When they sense danger, these goats become very careful. They climb up into hard-to-reach rocky areas early in the morning. They come out again just before it gets dark.
During the hottest parts of the year, they rest more during the day. They might graze, or eat grass, for a good part of the night.
Amazing Climbing Skills
Wild goats have an incredible sense of balance. They can jump straight up about 1.75 meters (5-6 feet) onto what looks like a completely vertical rock wall! They seem slow when moving across rock faces, but they can slide down almost straight rock walls that are 4-6 meters high without getting hurt.
When two male goats challenge each other, they often stand on their back legs. They bend their heads to one side before charging forward and clashing their horns together.
Where Do Sindh Ibex Live?
The Sindh ibex lives in the Kirthar Mountains. These mountains are found in the southern Sindh and southwestern Balochistan provinces of Pakistan. They also live in the nearby areas of Makran.
