Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God is a very well-known speech, also called a sermon. It was given by Jonathan Edwards in 1741. Edwards was an important Calvinist religious leader. This sermon is often studied in schools and universities in the United States. It is a famous example of Puritan writing.

Edwards gave this sermon many times. The first time was in Northampton, Massachusetts. But it did not get much attention there. The second time he gave it was in Enfield, Connecticut. During this speech, many people cried, fainted, or shouted out. Some even had convulsions.

The main idea of the sermon came from a Bible verse. This verse is Deuteronomy 32:35, which says, "Their foot shall slide in due time." This was the main focus at the start of the sermon. It was common in 18th century New England for sermons to be printed. Many copies of this sermon were made. It became a key part of Edwards's ideas and preaching. It also helped spread the ideas of the first Great Awakening, a time of religious revival.
