Sir Andrew Clark (born October 28, 1826 – died November 6, 1893) was an important Scottish doctor and pathologist. A pathologist is a doctor who studies diseases. He was known for being a very skilled physician in London.

Early Life and Education

Andrew Clark was born in Aberdeen, Scotland. Sadly, his mother passed away when he was born, and his father, who was also a doctor, died when Andrew was only seven years old. His uncles helped raise him.

He went to school in Aberdeen and then in Dundee, where he attended the High School of Dundee. After that, he worked as an apprentice for a pharmacist, learning about medicines.

Later, he began studying medicine at the University of Aberdeen. He then moved to Edinburgh to continue his studies. He was a brilliant student and worked as an assistant in the Pathology Department at the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary. However, he started showing signs of tuberculosis, a lung disease. To help his health, he joined the medical team of the Royal Navy in 1848, hoping the sea air would be good for him.

Medical Career

In 1849, Andrew Clark became a pathologist at the Haslar Hospital. A few years later, in 1853, he got a new job as the curator for the museum at the London Hospital. He planned to focus on studying diseases there.

In 1854, he earned his doctor's degree. Around this time, a position for an assistant physician opened up at the London Hospital. People thought he wouldn't live long because of his tuberculosis, so they let him have the job. He often joked about this, saying that he was the only one from that original hospital staff who was still alive many years later!

In 1854, he became a member of the Royal College of Physicians, which is a very respected group of doctors. In 1858, he became a fellow, which is an even higher honor. He continued to rise through the ranks, eventually becoming the president of the college in 1888. He held this important position until he passed away.
