Sir Francis Fletcher-Vane, 3rd Baronet (born March 29, 1797 – died February 15, 1842) was an important British landowner. He held a special family title called Baronet. In 1837, he served as the High Sheriff of Cumberland, a role similar to a chief law officer for the county. He was the third Baronet of Hutton.

Sir Francis's Life Story

Francis Fletcher Vane was born on March 29, 1797. His parents were Sir Frederick Fletcher Vane, 2nd Baronet, and Lady Hannah. He studied at Trinity College, Cambridge.

In 1832, when his father passed away, Francis became the 3rd Baronet of Hutton. This meant he inherited his father's title and responsibilities. In 1837, he was chosen to be the High Sheriff of Cumberland. This was a very important job in his local area.

Sir Francis was not well for much of his life. He passed away in Frankfurt, Germany, on February 15, 1842. His body was later brought back to England and buried at St James’s Church in Hutton in the Forest.

His Family Life

In 1823, Sir Francis married Diana Olivia Beauclerk. Her father was Charles Beauclerk.

Diana Beauclerk's family had a famous connection: her great-grandfather was Charles Beauclerk, 1st Duke of St Albans. He was a son of King Charles II and the actress Nell Gwyn. Diana's grandfather was Topham Beauclerk, a well-known person in the 1700s who was friends with Samuel Johnson, who created England's first dictionary.

Diana's father, Charles Beauclerk, married Emily Ogilvie. They had many children and lived in Sussex, England. They were neighbors with the famous poet Percy Bysshe Shelley.

Sir Francis and Lady Diana had three children: Gertrude, Henry, and Frederick.

Gertrude Elizabeth Vane

Gertrude was born on June 29, 1831, in Hutton in the Forest. In 1857, she married Vincent Wing, who was a Major in the army.

Major Vincent Wing fought in the Crimean War (1854–1855). He was badly hurt in a battle called the Battle of the Alma. He also took part in the Siege of Sebastopol. He later retired from the army. Gertrude's brother, Frederick, also fought in the Crimean War, which might be how Gertrude and Vincent met.

Vincent Wing passed away in 1874. Gertrude passed away 21 years later in 1895. They had a son named Frederick Drummond Vincent Wing, who was born in 1860.

Henry Ralph Fletcher Vane

Sir Francis and Lady Diana’s second child was Henry Ralph Fletcher Vane. He was born in 1829. When his father, Sir Francis, passed away, Henry became the next Baronet.

Frederick Fletcher Vane

Frederick was the third child, born on December 12, 1832, in Hutton in the Forest. He went to Eton College for school. After school, Frederick joined the army. He became an Ensign, then a Lieutenant, and later a Captain and Major.

He was slightly wounded in the Second Battle of Inkermann in 1854. He was also severely wounded during a big attack on the Redan in 1855. Frederick passed away in London. He left his property to his brother, Henry Ralph Fletcher Vane.
