Skarsterlân was a special local government area, like a district, in the province of Friesland in the Netherlands. It was created on January 1, 1984. This happened when several smaller areas, called municipalities, joined together. These included Doniawerstal and Haskerland. Parts of Utingeradeel, like the villages Akmarijp and Terkaple, also joined. The village Nieuwebrug, which used to be part of Heerenveen, also became part of Skarsterlân.

The main office for Skarsterlân was in the town of Joure. Skarsterlân existed for 30 years. On January 1, 2014, it joined with two other municipalities, Lemsterland and Gaasterlân-Sleat. Together, they formed a brand new municipality called De Fryske Marren.

When it was first created, the area was called Scharsterland in the Dutch language. But starting from March 1, 1985, the name was officially changed to Skarsterlân, which is the name in the West Frisian language. The Dutch name was no longer used after that.
