Skull Island (Washington) facts for kids

Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Skull Island refers to two small islands located in the beautiful San Juan Islands group, which is part of the U.S. state of Washington. These islands are known for their unique history and natural beauty.

Where Are the Skull Islands?

There are two islands named Skull Island in the San Juan Islands. It can be a bit confusing, but they are in different spots!

The Northern Skull Island

The first Skull Island is found near Orcas Island. It sits off the coast in a place called Massacre Bay, which is part of West Sound. This island is quite small, about 3.7-acre (1.5 ha) in size.

The Washington State Parks and Recreation Commission looks after this island. It is officially known as Skull Island State Park Property. Since 2013, this island has also been part of the San Juan Islands National Monument. This means it's a special place protected by the government for its natural and historical importance.

How Did It Get Its Name?

The northern Skull Island got its name because of a sad event that happened in 1858. It's said that the island was where bones were found after a conflict. A group of Lummi people were attacked by raiding Haida from another area. The island became known for holding the remains from this historical event.

The Southern Skull Island

The second Skull Island is located about fourteen miles south-southeast from the first one. You can find it in Mud Bay, which is part of Lopez Sound. This island is situated between the Sperry Peninsula of Lopez Island and Fortress Island.

Both Skull Islands are small, but they are interesting parts of the San Juan Islands. They remind us of the area's rich natural environment and its long history.
