The Story of Slick
How Slick Started
Slick began as a busy place because of oil! In 1920, it became an "oil boom town." This means many people moved there quickly because oil was found nearby. The town was named after a man named Thomas B. Slick. He was an oilman who found oil in a well close to the area.
The Oil Boom and Bust
In the same year, a railroad called the Oklahoma-Southwestern Railway was built to reach the town. By 1922, Slick was growing fast. It had an estimated population of 2,500 to 3,500 people.
However, the oil production started to slow down in late 1923. Because of this, the railroad was no longer used by 1930. When the government first counted the people in Slick for the U.S. census in 1930, the population was only 422. This number kept going down until 1950. Since then, the population has changed a bit but stayed small.
Today, most people who live in Slick travel to other towns for work. They go to places like Bristow, Sapulpa, and Tulsa.
Where is Slick Located?
Slick is found near the Deep Fork River. It is southeast of Bristow and is located right on State Highway 16.
The town also has a public park. You can find it on the west side of State Highway 16. This park is a place where fun events like Easter Egg Hunts are held for the community.
According to the United States Census Bureau, the town covers a total area of about 0.4 square miles (1.0 square kilometer). All of this area is land.
