Sliddery (in Gaelic, Slaodraidh) is a tiny village on the southwest coast of the Isle of Arran in Scotland. It is located near the Ross road, between the villages of Lagg and Blackwaterfoot.
What's in a Name? The Story of Sliddery
The name Sliddery might come from a Scottish Gaelic word. This word means "dragging" or "trailing."
However, there is another exciting story about the name. It is said that a group of Vikings tried to settle here long ago. A big fight happened in the Sliddery Water valley. Some people believe the name is connected to this historic battle.
Exploring Sliddery Today
Today, Sliddery sits high on a hill. It is about 1⁄2 mile (800 metres) from the shore. The village overlooks the estuary, which is where a river meets the sea.
Many small lanes lead down to a pebble beach. From the beach, you can see across the Kilbrannan Sound. On a clear day, you might even spot Ireland and the famous island of Ailsa Craig.
