Slite is a town on the northeast coast of Gotland. A water channel called Sjuströmmar divides the town. This channel connects Bogevik bay with the Baltic Sea.
The main part of Slite is in an area called Othem socken. The southern part, across the Sjuströmmar channel, is in Boge socken.
Islands Near Slite
Just outside Slite, you'll find a group of small islands. This group is called Slite skärgård, which means Slite archipelago.
The biggest island is Asunden. It has a special area with tall, pillar-like rocks called stacks. This area is protected as a nature reserve.
Close to Asunden's southern tip is a smaller island named Grunnet. The island closest to the Sjuströmmar channel is Enholmen. On Enholmen, you can find the historic Karlsvärd Fortress.
Slite Church: A Modern Landmark
High up on a cliff in northern Slite stands the modern Slite Church. It was built between 1959 and 1960. A Danish architect named Holger Jensen designed this unique church.
As of 2019, Slite Church is part of the Othem-Boge parish. It shares this parish with the churches in Othem and Boge.
Slite's Past and Present
For a long time, Slite was a very important place for trade and business. Today, tourism brings many visitors to the town.
Another big industry here is making concrete. They get the raw material, which is a type of rock called limestone, from nearby quarries. If you look outside Slite, you'll see the large limestone quarry run by Heidelberg Materials Cement Sverige AB.
The Old Slite Railway
From 1902 to 1953, Slite had a railway line. It connected Slite to Roma, which is about 33 kilometers (20 miles) away. This railway helped transport goods and people.
