History of Smeaton Grange
Early History and First Peoples
The land where Smeaton Grange is today was originally home to the Darug people. Specifically, the Muringong group lived here. They were the southernmost group of the Darug nation.
European Settlement and Farming
In 1805, a man named John Macarthur started a large farm nearby in Camden. He was famous for being a pioneer in the wool industry. He raised merino sheep on his property.
Smeaton Grange During World War II
During World War II, Smeaton Grange was used by the army. A temporary camp was set up there for soldiers.
Modern Development and Technology
More recently, in July 2017, a big online company called Amazon bought land in Smeaton Grange. They paid $7 million for a site that is about the size of five football fields. This land is now used for an Amazon Web Services data centre. A data centre is like a huge computer server room that stores information for many websites and online services.
