Smithfield's Past
Smithfield began its story in 1890. It was carefully planned out on land that used to belong to Elbert and Nancy Smith. This is how the village got its name! For many years, Smithfield was an important stop for trains. It served as a shipping point on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad. This meant goods and crops could be sent out from here to other places.
