Learning in Smithfield Plains
Smithfield Plains has seen some big changes in its schools over the years. These changes help make sure students have modern places to learn.
New Schools for Young Learners
The John Hartley School is a special school that opened in the 2010s. It teaches students from birth all the way up to Year 7. This means it helps very young children start their learning journey and continues to support them through their primary school years. This new school replaced some older schools in the area.
Joining Forces: Mark Oliphant College
Around the same time, two other schools in Smithfield Plains closed their doors. These were Smithfield Plains High School and Smithfield Plains Junior and Primary School. Instead of having separate schools, they joined together. This is called a merger. They became part of a brand new school called Mark Oliphant College.
Mark Oliphant College opened its new campus in 2011. It is located in a nearby suburb called Munno Para. This college offers education for students from Reception (the first year of primary school) right through to Year 12 (the final year of high school).
What Happened to the Old Buildings?
After the schools moved to Mark Oliphant College, the old buildings were no longer used. The former Junior and Primary School buildings were taken down in early 2019. The land where they stood was then divided into smaller pieces. These pieces of land are now being used to build new houses for families.
The old Smithfield Plains High School buildings were also left empty for about 10 years. They were finally taken down in 2020. This made way for new developments in the area.
