Snape Maltings
The concert hall at Snape Maltings

Snape Maltings is a special group of buildings in the village of Snape, Suffolk, England. It is famous for its amazing concert hall. Many concerts happen here, especially during the yearly Aldeburgh Festival.

A famous composer named Benjamin Britten and singer Peter Pears lived nearby in Aldeburgh. They started a music school for young people. Today, this school is called the Britten-Pears Foundation. It helps young musicians learn from top teachers and perform in concerts. Many students have recently finished music college.

What Are the Snape Maltings?

The buildings at Snape Maltings are very old, mostly from the 19th century. They sit right next to the River Ore. Long ago, these buildings were used to make malt from barley. Malt is a key ingredient for making beer. Once the barley was malted, it was sent to London and even exported to other parts of Europe.

The Maltings stopped making malt in the 1960s. After that, the buildings were carefully fixed up and rebuilt. This is how the famous concert hall was created. It first opened in 1967. Sadly, it burned down in 1969 but was quickly rebuilt and opened again in 1970.

The Holst Library

The Holst Library is part of the Snape Maltings. It is named after Imogen Holst. She was the daughter of another famous composer, Gustav Holst. Imogen Holst was a close friend of Benjamin Britten. She also helped organize the Aldeburgh Festival from 1956 to 1977.

Concerts and Events

The concert hall at Snape Maltings is a busy place! It hosts many concerts and other activities all year round. Aldeburgh Music holds concerts there in June. In August, the Snape Proms take place. For these concerts, some people can buy cheaper tickets and sit on the floor at the front. They often bring rugs to sit on and enjoy the music.
