Heidi is a special twelve-year-old girl. She lives with her mother, who has a mental disability. Even with this challenge, Heidi feels very lucky. Their kind neighbor, Bernadette, takes care of them. Bernadette has been with them since Heidi was a baby.
Heidi knows very little about her family. Her mother can only say 23 words. One of these words is "soof." Heidi finds some old photos of a group home. She decides to travel all by herself. She goes from Reno, Nevada, all the way to Liberty, New York. She hopes to find out more about her family's past.

Heidi DeMuth
Heidi is the main character of the story. She is a brave and kind twelve-year-old girl. Heidi is also very determined to find answers. She is known for being extremely lucky.
Sophia Lynne DeMuth (Mama)
Sophia is Heidi's mother. She has a mental disability. Sophia is loving and gentle. She has a very small vocabulary. She loves Jujyfruit candies. However, she is very afraid of buses.
Bernadette "Bernie"
Bernadette is Heidi's next-door neighbor. She acts like a guardian or mother to Heidi. Bernadette has a condition called agoraphobia. This means she is afraid of crowded places or leaving her home.
Alexander "Zander"
Zander is an older boy in Heidi's apartment building. He might seem a bit rough. But Heidi enjoys his company. He tells wild and unbelievable stories. Heidi likes to figure out if they are true.
Elliot Hill
