Soanian facts for kids
The Soanian site is a very old place where archaeologists have found amazing things from the early Stone Age. This site gets its name from the Soan River valley, which is located in the Sivalik Hills in Pakistan. Scientists believe that the people who lived here were likely Homo erectus, an early human species famous for being the first to learn how to control fire.
Discovering Ancient Tools
At the Soanian site, archaeologists have found hundreds of stone tools. These include stone knives, hand axes, and cleavers. These tools tell us a lot about how these ancient people lived and hunted. Even though many tools were found, no human skeletons from this time period have been discovered at the site.
Fossils of Long Ago
The Soan River Gorge is also a great place to find fossils. These are the remains of ancient plants and animals preserved in rocks. Scientists have found fossils that are about 14 million years old! These fossils include animals like gazelles, rhinoceroses, crocodiles, giraffes, and rodents. Some of these incredible fossils are even on display at the Natural History Museum in Islamabad, Pakistan.
