Sock facts for kids
Socks are pieces of clothing that people often wear on their feet. They are super helpful because they soak up sweat, which keeps your feet dry and comfy. Socks also make your feet feel soft and warm, especially when it's cold outside. Most socks are made from soft materials like cotton or wool.
Socks come in different lengths. Some are short and only cover your foot and ankle. Others are much longer and can go all the way up your lower leg to your knee. A special type of sock called toe socks has a separate little pocket for each of your toes, just like gloves for your fingers!
You can find socks in almost any color you can imagine. White socks are often worn for everyday activities or when playing sports. Darker socks, like black, brown, gray, or navy blue, are usually worn with dressier clothes for school events or formal occasions. Some dress socks even have cool patterns on them, like diamonds. These are called "argyles."

12th-century cotton sock, found in Egypt. The knitter of this sock started work at the toe and then worked up towards the leg. The heel was made last and then attached to loops formed while knitting the leg. This practice allowed the heel to be easily replaced when it wore out.
