School uniform facts for kids
A school uniform is a special set of clothes that students wear for school. It's like a team outfit for everyone in the school! Many elementary and secondary schools around the world use uniforms.
A uniform might include things like button-down shirts and pants for boys, or blouses and pleated skirts for girls. Often, students also wear blazers. Sometimes, a uniform is simpler, like just needing a collared shirt or only being allowed to wear certain colors. It helps everyone look neat and feel like part of the school community.

What's the Difference: Uniforms vs. Dress Codes?
People sometimes use the words "uniform" and "dress code" to mean the same thing, but they are different! A dress code is much less strict than a uniform.
A dress code gives rules about what you can't wear. For example, it might say no ripped clothes, no big logos, or that you can't show too much skin. It's about what's not allowed.
A school uniform, however, tells you exactly what to wear. It's a specific outfit chosen by the school. Different schools and different grade levels often have their own unique uniforms.
A Look Back: When Did Uniforms Start?
It's a bit tricky to know exactly when school uniforms first started because there isn't one clear written history. However, many people believe the idea of school uniforms began in the 1500s in the United Kingdom.
The Christ's Hospital School in England is thought to be the first school to use a uniform. This was in 1552. Students there were given a uniform that included a long blue coat and yellow, knee-high socks. It's amazing, but students at that school still wear a very similar uniform today!
Even earlier, in 1222, an important church leader in England said that students should wear a special type of academic clothing. This old practice slowly led to the idea of uniforms in English schools and universities.
Uniforms were especially common in schools for poor children, where the clothes were often provided for them. Over time, uniforms also became a way to show a student's social class or status. While uniforms might seem old-fashioned, they have changed a lot over the years to fit modern styles.
