Soe Win (Burmese: စိုးဝင်း; born on March 1, 1960) is a general from Myanmar. He is currently the Deputy Prime Minister of Myanmar. He took on this important role when a new temporary government was formed on August 1, 2021.
Soe Win also holds several other key positions. He is the Vice Chairman of the State Administration Council (SAC). This council helps to run the country. He is also the Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Tatmadaw, which is Myanmar's armed forces. Plus, he is the Commander-in-Chief of the Myanmar Army. He is also part of Myanmar's National Defence and Security Council, a group that makes big decisions about the country's safety.
In May 2012, the President at the time, Thein Sein, chose Soe Win to join a special team. This team was in charge of talking with different armed groups in Myanmar to make peace. He is known to have worked closely with a former leader of the country's government, Maung Aye.
Early Life and Education
Soe Win was born on March 1, 1960, in a city called Mandalay in Burma. Burma is now known as Myanmar. His parents were Chit Sein and Kyin Htwe.
In 1976, he started a special training course for military cadets at the Defense Services Academy. He studied alongside Ye Htut. Soe Win did very well in his studies, especially in military science and literature. He finished his training and graduated in 1981. He was part of the 22nd group of students to graduate from the academy.
Military Career and Leadership Roles
After graduating from the Defense Services Academy in 1981, Soe Win began his military career. In June 2008, he became the commander of the Northern Regional Command of the Myanmar Army. This command is in charge of military operations in Kachin State.
In August 2010, he took on another important role. He became the Chief of the Bureau of Special Operations-6 (BSO-6). This job meant he was in charge of military actions in Chin and Rakhine States, as well as the Magway Region.
Soe Win also worked to encourage the Kachin Independence Army (KIA) to become a Border Guard Force (BGF). A Border Guard Force operates under the control of the main military, the Tatmadaw. He had many meetings with KIA leaders in 2009 and 2010. However, the KIA did not agree to become a BGF.
In September 2011, there were reports that the KIA accused Soe Win of ordering attacks on their positions. These attacks were said to have happened in Kachin State. The KIA claimed this went against peace agreements they had signed earlier. Soe Win denied these claims. He stated that neither he nor anyone in his Northern Regional Command had ordered an attack on the KIA.
Personal Life
Soe Win is married to Than Than Nwe. She was born in 1954.
