Sohei Miyashita (宮下 創平, Miyashita Sohei, 10 November 1927 – 7 October 2013) was an important Japanese politician. He held several big jobs in the government. He was the Minister of Health and Welfare from 1998 to 1999. Before that, he led the Environmental Agency from 1994 to 1995. He also served as the head of the Defense Agency from 1991 to 1992.
Sohei Miyashita was a member of the Liberal Democratic Party, which is a major political party in Japan. He was elected to the House of Representatives, which is like one of the main parts of Japan's parliament, and served there for many years, from 1979 to 2003.

Early Life and Education
Sohei Miyashita was born in Nagano Prefecture on November 10, 1927. His family worked as farmers. He first went to the Imperial Japanese Army Academy. After World War II, this academy was closed. So, he then went to the University of Tokyo. After finishing university in 1951, he started working for the Ministry of Finance.
Political Career Highlights
Miyashita worked for a long time in the Ministry of Finance. In 1968, he became a secretary to Shigeru Hori, who was the Chief Cabinet Secretary. This is a very important role in the government.
Joining the House of Representatives
In 1979, Miyashita decided to leave the Ministry of Finance to run for election. He ran in the 1979 House of Representatives election. He won his first election and served for seven terms in total. This means he was re-elected many times, showing people trusted him.
Leading the Defense Agency
In December 1990, Miyashita became a director in his political party. On November 5, 1991, he was chosen to be the Director-General of the Japan Defense Agency. This job meant he was in charge of Japan's defense and military. He served in this role until December 12, 1992.
Serving the Environment
Later, Miyashita was appointed as the Director-General of the Environmental Agency. He started this role in August 1994 under Prime Minister Tomiichi Murayama. He took over from Shin Sakurai. He worked to protect Japan's environment until August 1995.
Minister of Health and Welfare
In November 1996, Miyashita took on a role in his party's tax committee. He then became the Minister of Health and Welfare in the government of Prime Minister Keizō Obuchi. He held this important position from July 1998 to January 1999. This role involved looking after the health and well-being of people in Japan.
Retirement and Legacy
Sohei Miyashita continued to work in politics until 2003. He decided not to run for election that year and retired. His son, Ichiro Miyashita, was then elected to take his place in the House of Representatives.
Miyashita passed away in Tokyo on October 7, 2013, at the age of 85. He is remembered for his long career serving in the Japanese government.
