Somme is a small country area in the Southern Downs Region of Queensland, Australia. It's a quiet place where people live and farm. In 2021, only 39 people called Somme home.

What Is Somme Like?
Somme is bordered by the Severn River on its east and south sides. Most of the land near the river is used for farms and homes. The north-western part of Somme is mostly undeveloped, meaning it's still natural bushland.
The History of Somme
How Somme Got Its Name
Somme was named after a very important event in history: the Battle of the Somme. This battle happened in northern France during World War I. It was one of the biggest battles for Australian soldiers. Many places in the Southern Downs Region are named after battles from World War I.
Early Schools in Somme
A school called Somme State School first opened around 1917. In 1924, it became a "half-time" school. This meant it shared a teacher with Apple Vale State School. The teacher would teach at one school for part of the week and then at the other. Both schools closed in August 1927. The first Somme State School was located near the corner of Somme Lane.
Another Somme State School opened on 22 February 1949, but it closed in 1962. It's not clear if this was the same school reopening or a completely new one.

In 2016, Somme had 53 people living there. By 2021, the population had changed to 39 people.
