Son en Breugel is a small town in the southern Netherlands. It is located just outside the city of Eindhoven. This area is known as a municipality.
The municipality covers an area of about 26.51 km2 (10.24 sq mi). A small part of this area is water. In 2014, about 16,277 people lived here.
Son en Breugel used to be two separate villages. These were called 'Son' and 'Breugel'. A stream called the Dommel separated them. Today, they are one combined town. Son en Breugel also shares borders with bigger towns. These include Eindhoven, Meierijstad, Nuenen, Gerwen en Nederwetten, and Best.
People in Son en Breugel speak a dialect called North Meierijs. This dialect is very similar to everyday Dutch.

A Look at History
Early Beginnings
The villages of Son and Breugel started between the 12th and 14th centuries. They grew quite fast. By the 15th century, about 300 families lived in the two villages. This was about 150 families in each village.
A famous painter, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, was born in Breugel. This was written in a book called Schilder-boeck in 1604.
Times of Trouble and Growth
Both Son and Breugel faced hard times during the Eighty Years' War. The number of families dropped to about 140. This meant only about 600 to 800 people lived there. But the villages managed to recover and grow again.
During the time of Napoleon, the two villages became one municipality. Until the early 1900s, the population stayed around 1,500 people. Between 1910 and 1940, more people moved to the area. The population grew from 1,600 to 3,500. People moved for work and better opportunities.
World War II and Modern Growth
Son en Breugel saw heavy fighting at the end of Second World War. This was especially true during Operation Market Garden. After 1960, Son en Breugel continued to grow steadily. By August 2002, the number of people living there was around 15,000.
What's Next for Son en Breugel?
Today, about 6,000 families live in Son en Breugel. The town is expected to grow even more. Around 3,000 new homes might be built in the coming years. This would be a 50% increase in homes. This growth helps the municipality stay independent. It prevents it from being taken over by the larger city of Eindhoven.
A new neighborhood called 'Sonniuspark' started being built in early 2009. This area will have 600 homes. It is expected to be finished by 2013.

Many interesting people were born in Son en Breugel:
- Franciscus Sonnius (1506–1576) - He was a religious leader. He became the first Bishop of 's-Hertogenbosch and later of Antwerp.
- Antoon van de Ven (1867–1934) - A farmer who also served as a mayor.
- Menno Oosting (1964–1999) - A professional tennis player.
- Bart Oomen (1964) - A Dutch actor.
- Adri Vogels (1941–2022) - A soccer player and coach.
- Michiel de Vaan (1973) - A Dutch expert in languages, especially ancient European languages.
