Exploring Sonadora's Past
How Sonadora Became Part of the U.S.
After the Spanish–American War, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. This happened because of an agreement called the Treaty of Paris of 1898. Puerto Rico then became a territory of the United States.

In 1899, the United States government counted the people in Puerto Rico. They found that Sonadora and a nearby barrio called Mula had a combined population of 1,183 people. This was one of the first official counts of people living in Sonadora.
