Sonoita is a small community in Santa Cruz County, Arizona, United States. It is known as a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's a special area defined by the U.S. Census Bureau for collecting population data, even though it's not an officially incorporated town or city. In 2020, about 803 people lived there.
The name Sonoita comes from the O'odham words Ṣon ʼOidag. This means "spring field," which makes sense because the area has natural springs.

Sonoita is in the northern part of Santa Cruz County in Arizona. It sits where two main roads meet: Arizona State Route 83 and Arizona State Route 82.

Sonoita is surrounded by beautiful natural features. To the west, you can see the Santa Rita Mountains. Southwest of the community are the Canelo Hills. The Sonoita Creek starts just west of Sonoita.
Nearby Historic Sites
Two important historic places, Fort Crittenden and Fort Buchanan, are about four miles west of Sonoita. They are located just north of Sonoita Creek and Route 82. These forts played a role in the history of the area.
