Sop saudara is a tasty Indonesian soup. It's a special dish from the city of Makassar in South Sulawesi. This soup is made with either beef or buffalo meat. People often eat sop saudara with steamed rice and ikan bolu bakar, which is grilled milkfish.

What's Inside Sop Saudara?

Sop saudara is a soup full of flavor and spices. It has small pieces of beef or buffalo meat. It also includes other parts of the animal, like fried cow's lungs. You'll find thin rice vermicelli noodles and perkedel, which are fried potato patties. A hard boiled egg is also usually added.

The soup gets its rich taste from a strong beef stock. Many different spices are mixed into it. These spices include garlic, shallot, and candlenut. Other spices are coriander, caraway, ginger, and galangal. You'll also find lime leaf, lemongrass, nutmeg, and cinnamon. To finish, it's often topped with chopped scallion and bawang goreng, which are crispy fried shallots.

Where Did Sop Saudara Come From?

Sop saudara was created by a man named Haji Dollahi. He used to work for Haji Subair, who was a famous seller of Coto Makassar. Coto Makassar is another traditional meat soup in Makassar. This was around the 1950s. Both Haji Dollahi and Haji Subair came from a town called Pangkajene in the Pangkajene Islands Regency. They both ran businesses selling traditional meat soups.

After working for Haji Subair for three years, Haji Dollahi decided to start his own business. He opened his first food stall in 1957. It was located in the Karebosi area of Makassar. The name "sop saudara" means "brotherly soup." This name was inspired by coto paraikatte, which was the name of a warung (a small restaurant) that sold Coto Makassar. In the Makassar language, paraikatte means "relative" or "friend." Haji Dollahi hoped that his soup would help create a friendly feeling with his customers.
