South Anna River facts for kids

The South Anna River is an important river in central Virginia, United States. It's like a smaller stream that flows into a bigger river. The South Anna River flows into the Pamunkey River, and it's about 102 miles (164 km) long.

The water from the South Anna River eventually travels through the Pamunkey River and then the York River. All these rivers are connected and their water ends up in the big Chesapeake Bay. This whole area where water collects and flows into these rivers is called a watershed.

Sometimes, this river has also been called the Anna River.

Where Does the South Anna River Start?

The South Anna River begins near a town called Gordonsville. This is in the southwestern part of Orange County.

From there, the river flows mostly towards the southeast and then to the east. It travels through several counties, including Louisa County and Hanover County.

What Rivers Join the South Anna?

The South Anna River doesn't stay alone for long! It meets up with another river called the North Anna River. When these two rivers join together, they form the Pamunkey River. This meeting point is about 5 miles (8 km) northeast of Ashland.

Close to where the South Anna River joins the North Anna, it also collects water from a smaller river called the Newfound River.
