The South Arkansas Regional Airport at Goodwin Field (IATA: ELD, ICAO: KELD, FAA LID: ELD) is an airport located about nine miles west of El Dorado, Arkansas. It is in Union County, Arkansas, in the United States. This airport helps people travel by air in the southern part of Arkansas.
For a while, an airline called SeaPort Airlines offered flights from here. This service was supported by a special government program called Essential Air Service. This program helps smaller communities have airline flights. SeaPort Airlines stopped flying from this airport on September 20, 2016.
The airport is mainly used for general aviation. This means it's used by private planes, business jets, and small charter flights, not usually large passenger airlines. An airport needs to have at least 2,500 people getting on planes each year to be called a commercial service airport.
The first airline flights at this airport started in 1945 with Chicago and Southern. Later, Trans-Texas began flying here in 1953. The last flight by Trans-Texas left in 1977.
Airport Features
The South Arkansas Regional Airport is quite large. It covers about 1,590 acres, which is like 642 football fields! It sits at an elevation of 277 feet (about 84 meters) above sea level.
Runways
The airport has two main runways made of asphalt. Runways are the long, flat areas where planes take off and land.
- Runway 4/22 is 6,601 feet (2,012 meters) long and 150 feet (46 meters) wide.
- Runway 13/31 is 5,100 feet (1,554 meters) long and 100 feet (30 meters) wide.
There used to be another runway, 17/35, which was made of concrete. However, it is now closed.
Airport Activity
In the year ending July 31, 2020, there were 18,020 aircraft operations at the airport. An "operation" means one takeoff or one landing. This averages out to about 49 flights each day!
Most of these flights were for general aviation (78%). This includes private planes and smaller business flights. About 11% were commercial flights, 8% were air taxi services, and 3% were military flights.
As of April 2022, there were 19 aircraft that called this airport their home base. These included:
