The South Cumberland Islands National Park is a special protected area in Queensland, Australia. It is about 831 km northwest of Brisbane, the capital city of Queensland. This park is known for its beautiful islands and clear waters.

However, it's important to know that between October and May, you might find marine stingers in the park's waters. These are small sea creatures that can sting.

Islands of the Park

The South Cumberland Islands National Park protects several islands. These include parts of Keswick Island, St Bees Island, Cockermouth Island, and Scawfell Island. Scawfell Island is the biggest island in this group.

Scawfell Island: The Largest Island

Scawfell Island is located about 60 kilometres (37 mi) off the coast of Queensland, northeast of Mackay. Many people consider it the start of the famous Whitsunday Islands group.

History of Scawfell Island

This island was first seen by Captain James Cook in 1770. He explored the area but did not name the island. Later, in 1802, Matthew Flinders named it "L Island" during his trip around Australia.

The island was renamed Scawfell Island in 1879. This new name was given by Staff Commander E. P. Bedwell of the Royal Navy. He named many islands in the Whitsundays. The name "Scawfell" comes from a tall mountain in England called Scafell.

Nature and Landscape

Scawfell Island has a high peak that reaches 397 metres (1,302 ft) above sea level. The island is shaped like a large horseshoe. Its coast has impressive granite cliffs.

This island is the largest national park island in the South Cumberland group. No one lives on Scawfell Island. Large areas of tropical rainforest cover its steep mountain slopes. There is also a beautiful coral reef surrounding the island.

Visiting Scawfell Island

Refuge Bay on Scawfell Island is a great spot for boats to anchor safely. You are allowed to fish here.

If you want to camp on Scawfell Island, you can! However, you need to bring everything you need with you, as there are no shops. You also need a permit from Queensland National Parks. Camping is allowed at sheltered spots in Refuge Bay.

St Bees Island: Home to a Family

St Bees Island is the second largest island in the park. It covers about 10.32 km2 (3.98 sq mi). A family lives on St Bees Island at a place called Homestead Bay.
