South Edmonton Common is one of Canada's biggest shopping areas. It is known as a "power centre" because it has many large stores. When it's fully built, it will cover a huge area of 320 acres. This makes it one of the largest outdoor shopping places in North America! You can find it in south Edmonton, Alberta, Canada. It stretches from 23rd Avenue to Anthony Henday Drive.

South Edmonton Common has over 150 stores and businesses. They offer all kinds of goods and services. The very first store to open here was The Home Depot in April 1998. Some of the main big stores, called "anchor tenants," include Canadian Tire (which is the biggest one in Canada!), IKEA, Cineplex Cinemas, Lowe's, Real Canadian Superstore, and Walmart. Other popular stores you might find are Staples, Best Buy, Marshalls, and Canada's first buybuy BABY.

Changes to Stores Over Time

Compusmart Store Changes

Walmart was one of the first two stores to open in South Edmonton Common back in 1998. It moved here from a nearby mall. On November 7, 2007, a brand new, bigger Walmart Supercentre opened at the south end of South Edmonton Common. This new Walmart has a full grocery store, including fresh meat, produce, and a bakery. It also has a Tim Hortons inside, which means there are now three Tim Hortons locations in South Edmonton Common! The old Walmart space is now shared by stores like Konto Furniture, Sofa Land, Bed Bath & Beyond, and buybuy BABY.

Future Shop Becomes Sport Chek

On September 19, 2008, a big electronics store called Future Shop opened its largest store in Canada at South Edmonton Common. It was a huge store, covering 53,000 square feet! However, this store, along with many others, closed on March 28, 2015. For a couple of months in 2015, a store called Spirit Halloween used the space.
