A Twin City Connection
South Fulton is known as a twin city with Fulton, Kentucky. These two cities are very close to each other, almost like neighbors.
Together, they used to host a special event called the International Banana Festival. This festival celebrated the fact that the local railroad had a station where bananas were kept cool with ice. These bananas were on their way to northern parts of the country after arriving from New Orleans. A fun tradition was a parade that featured a huge two-ton banana pudding, which was then shared with everyone at the end of the parade route!
The Banana Festival made a comeback in 2011. In 2012, they celebrated its 50th anniversary. This festival usually happens in late September and still includes the famous pudding, along with many seller booths and food stands.
A Look at History
South Fulton was first known by a different name: Jacksonville. This was because the land in the area once belonged to Andrew Jackson, who later became a U.S. President. Records show that Andrew Jackson sold 1,000 acres (about 400 hectares) in northeast Weakley County in 1823.
Jacksonville existed from about 1859 until 1895. That's when South Fulton was officially recognized as a city for the first time.
