South Portsmouth is a small place in Greenup County, Kentucky, in the United States. It's called an "unincorporated community" because it doesn't have its own local government like a city or town. It sits right on the Ohio River, directly across from a bigger city called Portsmouth, Ohio. A road called Kentucky Route 8 goes through South Portsmouth.

History of South Portsmouth

South Portsmouth has an interesting past. It was first known as Springville. This name came from the many natural springs found in the area.

Becoming a Town

Springville officially became a town on March 3, 1876. Later, in the early 1900s, the Chesapeake and Ohio Railway built train tracks through the community.

Name Change

After the railway arrived, the name of the community changed. It became South Portsmouth. This new name likely showed its location. It also helped connect it more closely with Portsmouth, Ohio. Portsmouth, Ohio, was a much larger city nearby.

South Portsmouth is connected by roads and railways. Kentucky Route 8 is a main road that runs through the community.

Train Station

Just east of South Portsmouth, there is an Amtrak train station. It is called the South Portsmouth-South Shore station. This station helps people travel to and from the area by train.

Native American History

South Portsmouth is also important for its history with Native Americans. It was once the location of an 18th-century Shawnee Indian village. This village was known as Lower Shawneetown.
