The South Staffordshire Railway Walk is a fun trail in Staffordshire, England. It stretches for about 5.5 miles (8.85 km). You can walk, cycle, or use a wheelchair along this path. It goes from Castlecroft all the way to Wall Heath. This special path is also a local nature reserve, which means it's protected for its wildlife.

History of the Railway Walk
This walk used to be a railway line! It was called the Wombourne Branch Line. The Great Western Railway Company built it between 1912 and 1925.
Early Days and World War II Use
The railway wasn't very busy with passengers. So, passenger trains stopped running in 1932. But the line was still important! During World War II, after the D-Day landings, it helped. Wounded allied soldiers were carried on this line. They were taken to different hospitals in the area.
Changes and Closure
In 1948, the railway became part of the Western Region of British Railways. This happened after the government took over the railways. This process is called nationalisation. Over time, fewer trains used the line. So, it was finally closed in 1965. This closure was part of the Beeching cuts, which were plans to close many railway lines to save money. The very last train ran on June 24, 1965.

The Route and Its Features
The walk begins in Castlecroft and ends in Wall Heath. Along the way, you'll pass through villages like Wombourne. In Wombourne, you can even find the Railway Café. The path has a surface that's good in all kinds of weather. This means it's easy for everyone to use. Wheelchair users, people with pushchairs, and cyclists can all enjoy it.
Parking and Connections
You can find free car parking at Wombourne Station and Himley Station. This makes it easy to start your adventure. The South Staffordshire Railway Walk is also part of a bigger route. It connects to the Smestow Valley Leisure Ride. This longer ride starts at Aldersley Leisure Village. It then goes through the old Tettenhall railway station to Castlecroft, and then joins our walk until Wombourne Station.
