Southgate is a city in Campbell County, Kentucky, United States. It is known as a "home rule-class city," which means it has the power to manage its own local government. In 2020, about 3,648 people lived in Southgate.

History of Southgate

The city of Southgate gets its name from the family of Richard Southgate. Richard was born in New York City. He moved to Newport, Kentucky, from Richmond, Virginia in 1795.

In 1797, Richard Southgate became a lawyer in Kentucky. He was also chosen to be the Commonwealth Attorney for Campbell County in 1798. This job meant he represented the state in legal cases. Later, he served as a State Representative from 1803 and a Senator from 1817 to 1821. Richard Southgate passed away in 1857 when he was 83 years old. His old home can still be seen in Newport. His son, William, also became a important politician for Northern Kentucky.

On May 28, 1977, a very sad event happened in Southgate. The Beverly Hills Supper Club caught fire, and 165 people lost their lives.
