Southwark Bridge is a cool arch bridge that goes over the River Thames in London, England. It helps people travel easily between the areas of Southwark and the City of London.
On the north-west side of the bridge, you'll find a place called Vintners Court. If you go to the south end, you'll be close to the famous Tate Modern art gallery and Globe Theatre, where Shakespeare's plays are performed.
The bridge just before Southwark Bridge (going upstream) is the London Millennium Bridge. The next bridge after Southwark Bridge (going downstream) is the Cannon Street Railway Bridge, which carries trains.
History of Southwark Bridge
The current Southwark Bridge opened in 1921. But did you know there was an older bridge in the exact same spot? That first bridge opened way back in 1819!
In June 2012, Southwark Bridge was part of a very special event. It was highlighted along the route for Queen Elizabeth II's Diamond Jubilee Pageant. This was a huge parade of boats on the River Thames to celebrate her 60 years as queen.
