Spade got its name from the Spade Ranch, a large cattle ranch that used to be in this area. In 1894, J. Frank Norfleet, who was in charge of the ranch, moved his family near where Spade is today.

The town of Spade officially started in 1924. This was when many farmers began to settle on the land that used to be part of the ranch. In 1931, a store and a cotton gin were built. These became the main buildings for the new community.

A post office opened in Spade in 1935. By 1940, the town had grown to include two churches, six businesses, and about 200 people. Spade has its own water system. This system gets water from the Ogallala Aquifer, which is a huge underground water source.

North of Spade, you can find the Triple Arrow Ranch. This ranch is about 1,000 acres (4 square kilometers) and has many old items from history. It is owned by William A. Thompson, Jr., who is a judge for Lamb County, and his wife, LeNora Jo Thompson.
