Spanish Springs is located in the northeastern part of the larger Reno and Sparks area. In 2020, about 17,314 people lived there.

Where is Spanish Springs?
Spanish Springs is located at 39°39′30″N 119°41′42″W / 39.65833°N 119.69500°W. It covers a total area of about 145 square kilometers (56 square miles). Most of this area is land, with a small part being water.
History of Spanish Springs
Spanish Springs has an interesting past, especially with aviation.
Early Airfields
- Sky Ranch Airport: In the 1940s, there was a dirt airstrip called Sky Ranch Airport. It was about 2,000 feet (610 meters) long.
- Reno Air Races: This airport was the very first place where the famous Reno Air Races were held in 1964 and 1965.
- Rocket Engine Testing: Later, in the late 1960s and early 1970s, Sky Ranch became a testing site for Rocketdyne. They tested rocket engines here that were used in the Space Program. The testing area was huge, covering about 126,000 acres (510 square kilometers).
Modern Development
Today, the land where Sky Ranch Airport once stood is covered by new homes. The Reno-Sparks area is growing, and more housing developments are being built.
Spanish Springs Airport
When Sky Ranch closed in 1970, a new airfield was built about 2 miles (3.2 kilometers) to the west. This new airport, known as Spanish Springs Airport (N86), has been open and used continuously since 1971.

Students in Spanish Springs attend schools in the Washoe County School District.
Paiute Language Classes
- In 2013, Spanish Springs High School started offering a special class. Students can learn the Paiute language.
- Washoe County was the first school district in Nevada to offer classes in the Paiute language. This helps keep the language and culture alive.
Public Library
Spanish Springs also has its own public library. It is a branch of the Washoe County Library system.
