Where is Speed?

Speed is found in the state of Missouri. It's located in Cooper County, which is in the central part of the state. The community sits right next to a small stream called Stephens Branch. This stream flows into a larger one named Petite Saline Creek. You can find Speed along Missouri Route F, a local road. It's about four miles north of a town called Bunceton. Another larger city, Boonville, is about nine miles to the north-northeast. If you travel two miles west on Missouri Route 5, you'll reach the community of Bellair.

A Quick Look at Speed's History

Speed has an interesting past, including a name change!

How Speed Got Its Name

The community was first established in 1868. Back then, it was known by a different name: New Palestine. The name was later changed to Speed. This new name honored Austin Speed, who was an important official for a railroad company.

The Post Office

A post office was opened in New Palestine in 1869. This was a place where people could send and receive mail. In 1898, when the community's name changed, the post office also changed its name to Speed. The Speed post office served the community for many years before it finally closed in 1955.
