Spellbound! is a fun computer game made by The Learning Company. It helps kids aged 7 to 12 learn spelling, new words, and how to use language better. The main goal of the game is to play different spelling challenges. If you do well, you get to compete in bigger and bigger spelling bees. The final challenge is the national spelling bee!
The first version of Spellbound! came out in 1991 for computers using DOS. Later, in 1993, a new version on CD added spoken words. This made the game work on Windows 95 and Macintosh computers too.

How to Play: Sharpen Your Spelling Skills
Before you start playing Spellbound!, you get to pick what words you want to learn. You can choose from different topics or even make your own word lists! Then, you pick how hard you want the game to be. There are three difficulty levels. This choice changes how many spelling problems you need to solve.
To get into a spelling bee, you first need to earn points. You earn points by playing fun spelling games. These games help you practice your words.
Spelling Practice Activities
Here are some of the activities you can play:
- Criss Cross: This game is like a crossword puzzle. You have to figure out words that fit together. It's also called "Work it out!"
- Flash Cards: In this game, words flash on the screen. You need to remember them and type them correctly. It's also known as "Watch it Flash!"
- Word Search: Here, you look for hidden words in a big box of letters. This game is also called "Find them All!"
Competing in the Spelling Bee
Once you earn enough points, you get to go to a spelling bee! This part of the game is called "Take a Trip!". In the spelling bee, you compete against two other players. Words will either appear on the screen or be spoken aloud. You must type the words correctly to win the bee.
After you win a spelling bee, you move on to the next level. There are five levels of spelling bees in total. As you get to higher levels, the activities and words become more challenging!
