Spindle Geyser is a type of geyser found in the Yellowstone National Park in Wyoming. It is located in an area called the Lower Geyser Basin.
What is Spindle Geyser?
Spindle Geyser is a natural hot spring that shoots out water and steam. It is part of a group of geysers and springs called the White Creek Group. This group also includes A-0 Geyser and Botryoidal Spring. You can find Spindle Geyser near White Creek, about half a mile (0.8 km) southeast of the Surprise Pool parking area.
How Does Spindle Geyser Erupt?
Spindle Geyser erupts for only a few seconds at a time. These eruptions happen every 1 to 3 minutes. Often, the eruptions are small, just a strong bubbling of the water. The water can sometimes shoot up to 1 to 3 feet high. Before 1985, Spindle Geyser used to have much bigger eruptions, reaching up to 10 feet!
Feeling the Geyser's Power
When you stand close to Spindle Geyser, you might feel strange thumping sounds coming from underground. These are called "subterranean thumps." They show how powerful the geyser is, even when its eruptions are small.
