Spirit Mountain, also known as Avi Kwa Ame (pronounced ə-VEE-kwə-AH-may), is a special mountain in Nevada. Its name, Avi Kwa Ame, comes from the Mojave language. It means "highest mountain."

This mountain is found within the Lake Mead National Recreation Area. It is close to the town of Laughlin, Nevada. Spirit Mountain is very important to Native American tribes in Southern Nevada. They consider it a sacred place.

Spirit Mountain is the tallest point in the Spirit Mountain Wilderness. It is also the highest peak in the Newberry Mountains. The top of the mountain is about 5,639 feet (1,719 m) high.

Why Spirit Mountain is Important

Spirit Mountain is listed on the United States National Register of Historic Places. This means it is recognized as a very important historical site. It is special because it is a sacred place for many Native American tribes.

A Place of Creation

For tribes who speak the Yuman language, Spirit Mountain is seen as the center of creation. This means they believe the world and their people began there. It is a very spiritual and respected area for them.

Avi Kwa Ame National Monument

A large area around Spirit Mountain has been made into a national monument. This was done to protect the land and its cultural importance.

How the Monument Was Created

People who care about the environment worked hard to protect this area. They wanted it to become a national monument. On March 21, 2023, President Biden officially created the Avi Kwa Ame National Monument.

The monument was named after Spirit Mountain itself. This is because the mountain can be seen from almost everywhere within the monument's boundaries.

Managing the Monument

The Avi Kwa Ame National Monument covers a huge area of about 506,814 acres (205,100 ha). Different groups help manage this land. These include the Bureau of Land Management, the National Park Service, and the Bureau of Reclamation. They work together to protect the natural beauty and sacred history of the area.
