Saltugilia splendens is a beautiful flowering plant. It is also known as the splendid woodland-gilia or splendid gilia. This plant belongs to the phlox family.
You can only find this plant in California. It grows in special areas like chaparral (a type of shrubland) and forests. These areas include the southern California Coast Ranges, the Transverse Ranges, and the San Jacinto Mountains.
What Does Saltugilia splendens Look Like?
Saltugilia splendens is a tall, slender wildflower. It has a straight stem with very thin branches. This plant can grow up to about 80 centimeters (about 31 inches) tall. The main stem usually has no leaves. Most of its leaves grow in a circle close to the ground. These leaves have many small parts.
Flowers and Fruit
The flowers grow in an open cluster. They are tiny and appear at the ends of thin branches. These branches have tiny dots called glands. Each flower is pinkish and shaped like a trumpet. They are about one centimeter long. Blue or purple parts, called the style and stamens, stick out from the flower.
After the flower blooms, it produces a small fruit. This fruit is a capsule, which is a type of seed pod. It is less than a centimeter long.
